(On the Art of War: Attack by Stratagem)
1. He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
2. He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
3. He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all the ranks.
4. He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.
5. He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.

William Tucci's Shi: Senryaku #1 Cover
I found an excellent book written about ancient Chinese deception schemes. I came across this book in an interesting manner: my wife and I collect comic books, one of our favorites being Shi: The Way of the Warrior, written by William Tucci and published by Crusade Comics. A 3 issue spin-off from the main title was called Shi: Senryaku and outlines 36 military deception strategies from a book called Secret Art of War: Thirty-Six Strategies. I tracked down a reprint of this called The Wiles of War (Foreign Languages Press, Beijing) at Amazon Books (incredible on-line collection of books; go there and see for yourself!). Here is one of the 36 strategies:
STRATEGY THREE - MURDER WITH A BORROWED KNIFE
Broken down into the military context, this strategy encourages the military commander to take advantage of the political environment. He should seek out the power groups that are at odds with the enemy (the enemy of mine enemy is my friend) and encourage them to fight in his instead. Result: Maximum effect with minimum effort.
